Guy Chouinard, dernier élève en pharmacologie du Dr Léon Tétreault, est membre fondateur de la spécialité pharmacologie clinique du Collège Royal des Médecins et Chirurgien du Canada. Il est l'initiateur des premières études sur les antipsychotiques atypiques (clozapine et risperidone), sur les premiers médicaments antipaniques (alprazolam et clonazepam) et sur la nouvelle génération d’antidépresseurs (fluoxetine, sertraline,buproprion, tomoxetine et duloxetine). Il est aussi l'auteur de deux échelles de mesure, ESRS (Extrapyramidal Symptom Rating Scale) et RSPS (Rating Scale for Psychotic Symptoms).
Ses recherches, tant sur le plan des méthodes (développement d'échelles d'évaluation de symptômes, stratégies de combinaison de traitements) que de l'évaluation de nouvelles molécules psychotropes, ont contribué à l'introduction de traitements novateurs dans diverses pathologies telles que la schizophrénie, la dépression, les états de panique, les troubles obsessionnels-compulsifs. Ces recherches sont déterminantes pour l'intégration des médecins cliniciens en recherche.
