Profil

Il mène ses travaux sur trois sites : Centre de recherche Fernand Seguin-Hôpital Louis-H. Lafontaine, Centre de recherche Fernand Seguin-Hôpital Rivière-des-praires (recherche chez l'humain) et au Centre de recherche de l'Hôpital du Sacré-Coeur de Montréal (recherche chez l'animal).  Ses thématiques de recherche sont : l'électrophysiologie et neuropharmacologie des états de vigilance chez l'animal et l'humain, le rôle des neurotransmetteurs dans le contrôle du cycle veille-sommeil et l'influence du sommeil sur la performance diurne.  Il collabore notamment avec François Guillem et Marc Lavoie pour ce qui est de l'impact du sommeil sur la cognition, avec Emmanuel Stip pour l'étude des altérations du sommeil dans la schizophrénie et avec Laurent Mottron pour l'autisme.

• Étude du sommeil, des rêves et de l'électroencéphalogramme (EEG) dans les maladies mentales.
• Impact d'une privation brève de sommeil sur l'humeur, la performance et l'EEG.
• Liens entre l'organisation du sommeil nocturne et la performance cognitive diurne.
• Liens anatomo-fonctionnels entre les structures cérébrales responsables de l'organisation du sommeil et les structures cérébrales soupçonnées de contribuer aux manifestations cliniques des troubles mentaux.

Chez l'animal (Laboratoire au Centre de recherche de l'hôpital du Sacré-Coeur)

• Études du sommeil et des rythmes biologiques chez le rat: polysomnographie, électrophysiologie, neuropharmacologie, température centrale, privation de sommeil, comportement moteur et performance.
• Modèles: vieillissement, dépression.

Méthodologies de recherche
Polysomnographie, analyse spectrale de l'EEG, collecte nocturne de récits de rêves, questionnaires, traitements neuropharmacologiques, évaluations neuropsychologiques.

• Corrélations entre l'organisation du sommeil normal et la performance cognitive diurne.
• Effets de privations totale et sélective de sommeil (sommeil lent, sommeil paradoxal)sur la performance cognitive et la cartographie EEG quantifiée.
• Étude du sommeil, de l'électroencéphalogramme et des rêves dans l'autisme, la schizophrénie, l'anxiété et les troubles de l'attention avec ou sans hyperactivité.

Chez le rat (Centre de Biomédecine, Hôpital du Sacré-Coeur de Montréal)

• Effets résiduels d'une privation totale ou sélective de sommeil sur la performance, l'électroencéphalogramme et les changements adaptatifs des récepteurs aminergiques centraux.
• Effets des psychotropes sur le sommeil, les rythmes biologiques circadiens (température centrale et locomotion) et l'électroencéphalogramme.
• Caractérisation biochimique et comportementale d'un modèle animal de la dépression post infarctus du myocarde
